An alternative approach to M&E

Last month I was invited to speak on a panel at a meeting of advocacy campaigners from across MSF worldwide on my approach to M&E.

I found this invitation really timely in encouraging me to document my more recent thinking on this subject, which has been evolving for many years as I have had contact with campaigners across the world.

As campaigners we are activists, we want to get things done to achieve change – and therefore many of us struggle sometimes with monitoring and evaluation. But I don’t think it has to be this way for campaigners.

As a result of my preparation for this session with MSF, I have drafted an article setting out my alternative approach to monitoring and evaluation. Regular readers of my blog will not be too surprised to see my focus on a theory of change or future story approach. But this is the first time that I have tried to set this approach in the context of M&E.

I hope this article is helpful for campaigners grappling with their own approach to M&E. And I’ll be fascinated to hear what you think of this approach!
